England finished the first day of the Commonwealth Games in third place with 1 gold, 3 silvers and 3 bronze medals. Australia were in first place and Scotland second thanks to golds from swimmers Caitlin McClatchey and David Carry. It was gold, silver and bronze for England’s track cyclists in the men’s 4000m individual pursuit. Paul Manning took gold in the all-England final beating Ron Hayles, whilst Stephen Cummings beat New Zealand’s Jason Allen to take the bronze. Victoria Pendleton won England’s first track cycling medal – a silver – in the women’s 500m time trial, and yet another cycling medal for England was won by Jason Queally with his third consecutive Commonwealth silver in the men’s 1k time trial. Another notable perfomance was weightlifter Jo Calvino, in the under-48kg, breaking the British record. She finished fourth. |
