Commonwealth Games Day 10 Print E-mail
Saturday, 25 March 2006
The penultimate day of the Melbourne Commonwealth Games saw England pick up their most golds so far. England won eight gold medals - the previous best was the five gold medals won on day three.

One of the golds went to marksman Mick Gault, who has been selected to carry the England flag at the closing ceremony.

Gault's gold in the 25m standard fire pistol was his 15th medal in four Commonwealth Games, meaning he has surpassed swimmer Karen Pickering’s England record of 13 medals from four Commonwealth Games.

The great success for England was in the boxing ring, where Don Broadhurst, Stephen Smith, Jamie Cox, Frankie Gavin and David Price all won gold medals.

The medals total for the day was: Golds 8 Silvers 4 Bronzes 3.

It could so easily have been 9 golds, but England women's 4x400m relay team were disqualified following their apparent victory.

Kim Wall, Nicola Sanders, Natasha Danvers-Smith and Christine Ohuruogu finished ahead of Australia and India, but Danvers-Smith was in the wrong position at the changeover for the third leg and so England lost out.

England's total medals attained thus far for the Melbourne Games are:

Golds 32 Silvers 39 Bronzes 31.
