After the eleventh and final day of the Commonwealth Games, England finished second with 36 Golds, 40 Silvers and 34 Bronzes. It was a great performance by Team England. Australia were runaway leaders with 84 golds, but England ended up ten golds ahead of third placed Canada. On Day 11 Tracey Hallam won badminton's women’s singles gold, while Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms won the mixed doubles title. Lee Beachill and Pete Nicol retained their squash men's double title to supplement Nicol's singles title he won earlier. It is invidious to select just a few perfomances but SuperEngland would like to highlight: Mick Gault whose medal tally of 15 from four Commonwealth Games is a new English record. Swimmer Mel Marshall, who became England’s most prolific woman medallist at a single Games. Her six medals in Melbourne, surpassing the previous record of five medals won by swimmers June Croft in 1982, Karen Pickering in 1994 and Karen Legg in 2002. Mel Marshall also equalled the overall record set by swimmer Brian Brinkley in 1974 and shooter Malcolm Cooper in 1982. Our swimmers overall did well, as did the cyclists, but special mention as a group must go to England’s boxers who won 5 gold medals in just 11 weight categories. |
