UK runners could not match the great African performance at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.

The Norwich Union Great Britain and Northern Ireland Team was the biggest contingent from Europe at the championships but failed to make a dent in the event.

In contrast Kenenisa Bekele, who at just 23 is considering retirement from the event, strode to his 10th World Cross Country gold and his 18th World Championship gold medal.

GB's best performance came from seventeen year old Sian Edwards, who was an excellent 10th in the junior women's race. Edwards was the first non-African in the 6kms race.

The British junior team were top European finishers in fifth position and the senior women finished seventh in the 8kms event even without Paula Radcliffe, Jo Pavey and sisters-in-law Hayley and Liz Yelling.
