England start well against Sri Lanka Print E-mail

Lords looked to be a batting wicket and in the morning session Strauss and Trescothick confirmed that - Strauss managing to pass 2,000 career Test runs.

It could have been even better for England but Strauss fell to Muralitharan on the stroke of lunch for 48 with England 86-1. Earlier Sri Lanka had been unlucky, when Murali had a cast-iron LBW appeal against Trescothick turned down.

England are giving Lancashire fast bowler Sajid Mahmood his debut, but Jon Lewis failed to secure his first cap.

England team in full:

Andrew Flintoff (captain), Marcus Trescothick, Andrew Strauss, Alistair Cook, Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood, Geraint Jones, Monty Panesar, Liam Plunkett, Matthew Hoggard, Sajid Mahmood.
