Sri Lanka made their highest ever second-innings score, reaching 537-9, to defy England in the first Test. In particular, it was a great effort from their tail with Kulasekara notching up 64 and Vaas finishing not out on 50.
The visitors were aided by nine dropped catches in their second innings including a few 'sitters'. One of the few England cricketers to perform well in the field was Geraint Jones, who, often criticised for his keeping, took five good catches.
