Rooney's Manchester United teammate, Cristiano Ronaldo, who was at the centre of the incident was caught on camera giving a sly wink after the event. In spite of Rooney's departure, England played well, and turned in their best performance in the tournament. A consistent theme throughout England's participation in the 2006 World Cup has been that it was not the 'stars' - Beckham, Lampard, Gerrard and Rooney - that performed best, but rather the fringe players like Lennon, Carrick and Crouch. |
