England's World Cup ends Print E-mail
Saturday, 01 July 2006
England were robbed by Portugal in the quarter-finals of the World Cup. Throughout Portugal had tried to turn the game in their favour through almost any means - fair or foul, but the most critical example was when they provoked Rooney into reacting and getting sent off.

Rooney's Manchester United teammate, Cristiano Ronaldo, who was at the centre of the incident was caught on camera giving a sly wink after the event.

In spite of Rooney's departure, England played well, and turned in their best performance in the tournament.

A consistent theme throughout England's participation in the 2006 World Cup has been that it was not the 'stars' - Beckham, Lampard, Gerrard and Rooney - that performed best, but rather the fringe players like Lennon, Carrick and Crouch.
