| Ivor Powell gets world record at 90 |

University of Bath football coach Ivor Powell celebrated his 90th birthday and discovered that he had entered the Guinness World Record as the oldest working football coach. Ivor Powell was born in Gilfach Bargoed on 5th July 1916. During the Second World War Ivor worked as an RAF physical trainer, and he became friends with Sir Stanley Matthews, who went on to be Ivor’s best man at his wedding to Joan Browell in 1943.
Ivor Powell and Sir Stanley played together for Blackpool. Powell also played half-back for QPR, and Aston Villa and was player/manager at Port Vale and Bradford City, and made 14 international appearances for Wales. Ivor’s transfer to Aston Villa in 1948 set a record transfer fee for a half-back of £17,500. Ivor Powell was manager at Carlisle United before becoming trainer/coach of Don Revie’s Leeds United side, where he coached players like Billy Bremner, Jackie Charlton and Norman Hunter. Powell moved to Bath City in 1964, before a spell coaching PAOK in Greece. In the early 1970s he joined the University of Bath as its first football coach. Ivor still works as an assistant football coach at the University of Bath and has completed 53 years as an FA accredited coach. |
