At the Night of Athletics at Heusden, Belgium, on Saturday Mo Farah achieved second place in the UK all-time 5000m rankings. His time of 13:09.40 –is only beaten by the national record of 13:00.41 run in Oslo on 7 July 1982 by David Moorcroft. Jemma Simpson, 22, became only the 13th UK female ever to run 800m in under 2 minutes. She clocked 1:59.99. Meanwhile The Norwich Union Great Britain and Northern Ireland Team performed well at the Under 23 and Under 20 Combined Events International in Berne, Switzerland. Louise Hazel beat the UK Athletics Development Entry Standard for the European Championships and Daniel Awde and Dominique Blaize reached the qualifying standards for the IAAF World Junior Championships in Beijing. Also in a busy weekend for athletics, amongst the medal winners at the World Junior trials and U20/U23 AAA championships at Bedford were Perri Shakes-Drayton (Victoria Park) who took gold in the Under 20 400m hurdles and in the Under 23 pole vault Paul Walker, who also took gold. Rowing: Britain won four medals including a gold at the World U23 Championships in Hazewinkel, Belgium. The lightweight men's pair of Richard Chambers and Chris Bartley won gold beating the U23 record time by 14 seconds. Sophie Hosking won silver in the lightweight women's single scull. |
