Read replaces Jones behind the stumps Print E-mail
Tuesday, 01 August 2006
With curious timing the England selectors have named a 12-man squad for the third Test against Pakistan with Chris Read replacing Geraint Jones as wicket-keeper.

Ironically Jones had just drawn some of his greatest praise for his wicket-keeping in Pakistan's second innings in the last Test.

The Telegraph discussing his five catches, wrote: "If Jones is ruled out of the next Test (because of a break in the tip of his right ring finger), his replacement will have to follow a tough act who has begun to keep admirably."

Chairman of Selectors, David Graveney, acknowledged that Geraint Jones had kept well, but commented:

" ...he has been short of runs and the selectors feel that this is the right time to make a change. We have taken this decision regardless of the injury to Geraint's finger."

Chris Read returns to the Test side for the first time since 2004.

England Third Test Squad:

Andrew Strauss (Middlesex) (capt)
Ian Bell (Warwickshire)
Paul Collingwood (Durham)
Alastair Cook (Essex)
Stephen Harmison (Durham)
Matthew Hoggard (Yorkshire)
Jon Lewis (Gloucestershire)
Sajid Mahmood (Lancashire)
Kevin Pietersen (Hampshire)
Monty Panesar (Northamptonshire)
Chris Read (Nottinghamshire)
Marcus Trescothick (Somerset)
