Michael Rimmer is fastest qualifier Print E-mail
Friday, 11 August 2006
SuperEngland's tip for the top, Michael Rimmer, was the fastest qualifier for the next round of the 800m, in an impressive 1min 47.10.

Meanwhile GB picked up three bronze medals.

Rhys Williams of Cardiff AAC took bronze in the 400 metres hurdles. Williams, who is the son of the Welsh rugby legend JJ Williams, is the European Under-23 champion and was fourth in the Commonwealth Games.

Becky Lyne took bronze in the 800m and dedicated her medal to Lillian Board who won the European title in 1969 but died the year later.

The third bronze was picked up by Marlon Devonish in the 200m - the same placing as the last European championships.

The BBC's Michael Johnson noted:

"He [Devonish] needs 20.30secs to get into the final at the World Championships next summer.

"But his bronze medal here is something he can build on and use to make those improvements for next season."
