The crux is that Pakistan made a protest after umpires Darrell Hair and Billy Doctrove had implied that they had cheated by ball-tampering. After the tea interval, and Pakistan failed to emerge the umpires removed the bails. When later on Pakistan came out, they were told it was pointless as the umpires would not be returning. Confusion reigned. It was not until late into the evening that the authorities confirmed that there would be no cricket tomorrow and that ticket-holders would be refunded. The authorities eventually made a statement, explaining why Pakistan had been deemed to have forfeited the Test: " ... In accordance with the laws of cricket, it was noted that the umpires had correctly deemed that Pakistan had forfeited the match and awarded the Test to England. "The Pakistan team was aggrieved by the award of five penalty runs to England. "The award of those penalty runs for alleged interference with the ball is under review by the ICC match referee Mike Proctor, whose report will be considered in due course. "ICC will be issuing a separate report concerning action which may be taken in relation to the forfeiture of the match by Pakistan." |
