England's youngsters lead Germany after first leg Print E-mail

England took a 1-0 first-leg lead in the Under 21's European Championship play-off against Germany after Leighton Baines scored an excellent 25-yard goal, 14 minutes from time.

England put in a fine performance and it is ironic that Steve McClaren is looking to replace Peter Taylor with a full-time manager.

It was a solid team performance with Theo Walcott, Wayne Routledge, Tom Huddlestone, David Nugent and Nigel Reo-Coker, the captain, all being particularly worthy of mention.

The England Under 21 side: (4-3-3): S Carson (Charlton Athletic) — M Richards (Manchester City), S Taylor (Newcastle United), A Ferdinand (West Ham United), L Baines (Wigan Athletic) — N Reo-Coker (West Ham United), T Huddlestone (Tottenham Hotspur), J Milner (Newcastle United) — W Routledge (Fulham: sub: G Agbonlahor, Aston Villa, 71min), D Nugent (Preston North End; sub: B Watson, Crystal Palace, 81), T Walcott (Arsenal; sub: A Young, Watford, 65).

Substitutes not used: J Hoyte (Arsenal), L Camp (Norwich City), M Kilgallon (Leeds United),

P Whittingham (Aston Villa). Booked: Huddlestone, Ferdinand.
