Although England lacked spark and the big names like Lampard and Rooney failed to impress, neverthless they had chances. However, all were squandered. England only really sparked with the arrival of Shaun Wright-Phillips substituting for the disappointing Downing after 70 minutes. Just as Aaron Lennon has come on for England in the past and been imaginative and direct, so Wright-Phillips created danger for the opponents by taking men on. In spite of dropping two points, England remain top of Group E as Israel drew with Russia. Steven Gerrard will be suspended for the match against Croatia and Rio Ferdinand will be doubtful because of the back injury that kept him out of the Macedonia game. England: Robinson, Gary Neville, Terry, King, Cole, Gerrard, Lampard, Carrick, Downing (Wright-Phillips 70), Rooney (Defoe 74), Crouch. Subs Not Used: Kirkland, Phil Neville, Carragher, Parker, Bent. Booked: Gerrard. |
