Dismal England defeated Print E-mail

An own-goal from Gary Neville effectively killed England's chances of rescuing anything from a disappointing performance as Croatia won the Euro 2008 qualifier 2-0.

Neville passed the ball cleanly back to Robinson, but the keeper missed his kick and the ball rolled into the empty net in surreal fashion.

Steve McClaren tried out a 3-5-2 formation with Gary Neville and Ashley Cole playing as wing-backs and the side looked uncomfortable.

Croatia were in control throughout and now have seven points from three games, as does Israel. England, like Macedonia, have seven points as well but have played an extra game.

It is too close for comfort with only the top two from each group qualifying automatically.
