Australia won the toss and Steve Harmison was wayward and taken off after just a couple of overs. Australia had reached 79 without loss before Freddie Flintoff - by far England's best bowler - boosted morale by getting Hayden to edge one to Collingwood. Earlier England had elected to start with Giles rather than Panesar, even though Giles had not played a first-class match in a year, compared to Panesar's 32 wickets in 10 Tests in the same period. England: A J Strauss, A N Cook, I R Bell, P D Collingwood, K P Pietersen, A Flintoff, G O Jones, A F Giles, M J Hoggard, S J Harmison, J M Anderson |
