In the run up to the match, almost everyone criticised England coach, Brian Ashton, but after the game there was little else but praise for the team that he had selected.

Newcomer Danny Cipriani played excellently and kicked 18 points on his debut.

After 52 minutes, England were forced into a change when Toby Flood went off and he was replaced by Jonny Wilkinson, who played well, and whose performance emphasised that modern day rugby is truly a squad game.
