Thursday, 19 January 2006

Former rugby player and coach, and now at Southampton football club, Clive Woodward was born on 6 January 1956 in Ely, Cambridgeshire.

Clive Woodward played for Harlequins and Leicester as well as England and the Lions.

Woodward coached Henley RFC, London Irish and Bath and then England (from 1997).

After a sticky start, Woodward proved a succesful England coach and England won the World Cup in 2003. It was an excellent England side that had also won the 6 Nations and beaten Australia and New Zealand on tour.

Sir Clive was knighted a year later but left the job to coach the Lions, but their tour of New Zealand in June/July 2005 was a great disappointment.

Woodward then became technical director of Southampton football club.
