In 2001 Liam Tancock gained two golds at the European Youth Olympic Days in Murcia, Spain. In 2005 Tancock won two bronze medals at the European Championships. In 2006, Liam Tancock won a gold in the 100m backstroke at the Commonwealth Games. He also picked up silvers in the 50m backstroke and the 4x100m relay medley. In 2007 Tancock took two bronze medals at the World Championships in Melbourne in the 50m and 100m backstroke. In the 50m Backstroke he broke the British record. At the time of the 2008 Olympics, Liam Tancock was studying Sport Science at Loughborough University. From the ages of 10 to 14 Tancock played rugby for Exeter as a winger.
