Nicole Cooke won Great Britain's first medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, and what's more it was a gold.

Nicole, whose motto appropriately is 'Pain is Temporary, Glory is Everlasting', won the women's road race.

Nicole Cooke clocked a time of 3 hours, 32 minutes and 24 seconds, after a spirited sprint over the last 200 metres of the 126.4km race.

Nicole commented:

"We did it, it was perfect. It's a dream come true. I want to thank all the people who have been there from the start. I have worked so hard, I am so happy."

Her team-mates Emma Pooley and Sharon Laws finished 23rd and 35th respectively.
